The Insomniacs placed first at the Sacramento Regional (March 21-23)! We will now be moving on to the World Championships in St. Louis. We would like to thank our excellent alliance partner teams 701 The Robovikes and 3189 The Circuit Breakers for making this win possible! Thank you to mentors, sponsors, parents, and friends who support our team!

In our first match of the day, Murphy’s Law held true. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. The autonomous malfunctioned and the endgame mechanism was misaligned. In the time between the first and second round, we identified and fixed all the problems and came back stronger. In round 2, we were the first alliance at the regional to break 100 points, with a score of 111-4 (61 of which we scored on our own). At the end of Friday, we were seeded first! As the preliminaries came to an end, we were placed as the 9th seed with a record of 8-3. We entered elimination as the 6th alliance captain, and chose the RoboVikes and Circuit Breakers to be our partners. We named ourselves the “Green Alliance”, and the phrase became an enthusiastic cheer for the crowd as we progressed through eliminations. We swept quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, and each win was considered a huge upset. During the quarterfinals we beat the 3rd alliance and at semifinals, we beat the 2nd alliance. At finals, we came out on top and won the title of 2013 Sacramento Regional FRC Winners.

Team Captain and American High School junior Ankit Shah says, “The team has worked very hard, improving consistently over the past couple of years, to get here. We didn’t expect to get so far in the competition, and the best part of the experience was the team coming together. The entire team is excited about World’s and is working even harder to make the best bot in Team 2489 history!”

Although we’re excited about World Championships, we can’t participate without more funding. It costs $5,000 for the team to register for the World Championships, and we need sponsors to help us out. It would be an amazing experience for all of us. There are many benefits to being a sponsor, namely publicity on team t-shirts, sweatshirts, banner, and robot, all of which will be seen by over hundreds of thousands of people at the international competition. And, you help more than 40 students per year in learning and applying STEM!

If you are interested in sponsoring the team, please contact The Insomniacs at info@team2489.org. You can also donate through the Paypal button on the homepage of the website, although for large amounts we prefer a mailed check. For more information about being a sponsor, check out the New Sponsors Page here.

We invite you to tour our workspace, and we would love to have a presentation/robot demonstration at your offices. Come check us out at our next competition, the Silicon Valley Regional at San Jose State University April 4-6!
